Development of a modernised style guide, UI, immersive training and 3D assets for Project Selborne

THE CHALLENGE

How do you modernise defence e-learning for an audience that grew up with games?

MY ROLE

Having worked at Babcock previously on a similar defence e-learning contract where I had felt frustrated by the style guide, I wanted to transform and elevate the visual design of the e-learning to reflect the audience we were set to target; naval personnel who were familiar with technology and gaming. I also wanted to create a premium learning experience that reflected the technological and strategic content in an immersive and engaging format.

I set about researching and pulling together moodboards and references of immersive and technological imagery and interactive platforms as examples of ways in which we could create a unified aesthetic across the courses, as well as how we could create guided learning representations of complex information in clear and engaging ways.

STYLE GUIDE DEVELOPMENT

After getting buy-in from the Media Development Manager and the wider team, I worked on creating a style guide outlining re-usable elements such as colours, UI elements, labels, arrows. These were tested against both dark and light backgrounds, and I also worked on designing slide templates for Articulate Storyline, the software that the e-learning designers were using to put together the lessons in.

Alongside this, I was working on live media requests where I implemented the Style Guide graphic elements into the 3D environments and assets that I was creating.

A highlight piece was working on the first Interactive Training lesson within the Control Information Centre onboard a navy submarine. I modelled the 3D assets in 3Ds Max, implemented them in Unity, and working with an engineer, I developed the UI and interactive animations within the lesson.
